This locally owned wind project is planned for installation on Georgia Mountain in the towns of Milton and Georgia, in northwestern Vermont. VERA monitors a wind measurement station for our client, which we also permitted and installed, to verify wind characteristics. Analyses indicate that Georgia Mountain Community Wind has adequate wind resources to power a small commercial project, and the three to five proposed wind turbines sited along the ridge line will provide enough power to meet the average electric needs of more than 3,500 Vermont households.
As the team leader, VERA's broad responsibilities include feasibility assessments, financial modeling, and the management of development strategy while respecting budgets and schedules. VERA's pre-feasibility analysis for this project evaluated key development aspects and identified potential “fatal flaws.” VERA also assisted in acquisition rights to develop neighboring land, and prepared grant proposals that resulted in substantial Vermont Clean Energy Development Funding.
Georgia Mountain Community Wind is unique in that the land owner and client is also the developer. Working closely with this client, VERA organized the development team comprised of Vermont technical experts. Local participation in all major aspects of development, including the sale of electricity to Vermont utilities, is the hallmark of this community-oriented effort. This small project requires efficient use of development resources including the site evaluation, environmental assessments, and permit review processes. The state permit application was filed in March of 2009, and Georgia Mountain Community Wind is hopeful for a Public Service Board decision in spring 2010.
